ArtSci Internship Principles

In the absence of a university-wide policy, the specific definition and structure of internships are determined by individual departments and centers. The College provides shared internship guidance and resources, while departments and centers shape internship definitions and expectations based on disciplinary and curricular priorities. These principles are intended to guide consistent, equitable internship practices across the college while honoring disciplinary differences.

Clarity

Students should be able to understand what qualifies as an internship and what is expected of them, regardless of department.

Educational Purpose

All internships should prioritize learning, skill development, and meaningful supervision.

Community & Access

Policies should minimize barriers and support student and community access to internship creation and opportunities.

Shared Responsibility

The college and departments work in partnership, with clearly defined roles and communication.

Quality & Safety

Employers and sites hosting our students must meet agreed-upon standards of professionalism, supervision, and safety.

Flexibility Within Structure

Departments retain flexibility in discipline-specific implementation within a shared college framework.
