Overview

Known for its exciting concerts and innovative combined productions, the USU Symphony Orchestra offers high-quality experience to music majors and non-majors that heightens their command and enjoyment of the symphonic repertoire. The orchestra frequently presents international guests and faculty soloists in its concerts. Recent guests include conductor Christoph Campestrini (Vienna Hofmusikkapelle), mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford (Metropolitan Opera), Deutsche Grammophon recording artist Francisco “Pacho” Flores (trumpet), and Berlin Philharmonic bassist Edicson Ruiz. Among the orchestra’s past collaborative concerts are Mahler’s Third Symphony with the Cache Children’s Choir and Women of the USU Choirs, Beethoven’s Ninth with the American Festival Chorus, and Mahler’s Fifth and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with the University of Utah Philharmonia. Fully-staged productions have included A Midsummer Night’s Dream with USU Theatre, The Magic Flute and Elixir of Love with USU Opera Theatre, Sleeping Beauty with the Cache Civic Ballet, and Appalachian Spring with the Martha Graham Dance Company (for whom Copland wrote the music in 1944).
